Longtime prosecutor Terry Houck was well on his way Tuesday night to clinching the Democratic nomination in the race for Northampton County District Attorney.
Houck
took an early and commanding lead over his Democratic opponent, Chief
Public Defender Nuria DiLuzio, and maintained a 40-point advantage with
87% of the precincts reporting, according to unofficial results. As of
10:50 p.m., he had 70% of the vote to DiLuzio’s 30%
“Our task is not complete,”
Houck said in a telephone interview just before 11 p.m. “Tonight we’re going to celebrate, but tomorrow we get to work on going forward to the General Election.”
DiLuzio
conceded the race at about 10:15 p.m. when she called to congratulate
Houck, who was celebrating with supporters at The Bayou in Easton.
“While
it is not the result I had hoped for, I’m very thankful to all my
supporters ..." DiLuzio said in a telephone interview, adding she is
asking her supporters to back Houck in the general election.
Houck
likely will face attorney Tom Carroll, the only Republican who ran in
the primary, this fall in a contest that will decide who will be the
county’s first new district attorney in 28 years. John Morganelli, first
elected DA in 1991, decided not to seek an eighth term and instead ran
unopposed for county judge. The DA race also marks the first time in 40
years a sitting district attorney isn’t in the race.
